While working as an Administrator at my writing community, I was asked by Poetize Magazine to write on this topic. It was when the bookstores started closing and so many started using e-readers. I like research, so I enjoyed writing non-fiction.
I joined a writing community years ago and used the pen name windowflower (small w), which I explain the origin of in another link. This is my first published poem, hand-picked by the staff of Poetize Magazine. It’s not the poem I would have picked, but I didn’t complain! Also wasn’t crazy that the poem was broken into two columns, but again, not complaining.
This publication was a lark with great timing!
I was taking a writing course with the Institute of Children’s Literature and this short story was my second assignment. My professor asked me to hold it back for later submission. I believed in the story and I couldn’t wait. I researched the Writer’s Market and submitted only to Click Children’s Magazine. They happened to be working on an issue about unusual pets and accepted my story. They asked me to add the fact inserts and that was all. They provided the illustrator, who did an outstanding job.
The best part….. they paid me $300 for my work! It was so validating.
“Runaway Rosie” turned out to be a two-fer. Later, I received a request from the Institute of Children’s Literature requesting to include my story in their updated teaching manual. That made me feel good! It only paid $25, but I was honored.
Welcome to my blog! I am a small town girl from the Midwest. I have a son, two granddaughters, a loving and supportive partner and a red toy poodle named Sampson. My professional background is in Finance and Crisis Intervention/Social Services. I also love documentaries, music, reading and the Green Bay Packers.
Writing has always been my best healing power, my talent. I have written some fiction, but I prefer non-fiction and poetry. I find that I express myself best through poetry. Many believe it’s just rhyming words, but I find the layers of poetry to be endless. I write free-verse, utilizing alliteration, slant rhymes, consonance and assonance.
I plan to blog about writing and everything related and to share some of my work not marked for other projects. My work in progress is the first of four poetry collections. It is planned to be a non-fictional prose and poetry book. Anyway, join me on my journey!
